No larger than a grain of sand, a tiny silverspot butterfly egg waits in the butterfly lab at the Oregon Zoo. In a few days it will hatch and a small caterpillar will emerge. The Oregon Zoo will rear the insect until it has grown and is ready to transform into a butterfly, and then it will be released into native habitat. © Oregon Zoo / photo by Michael Durham.
